Fatal Accident Prompts Alderman Solis to Commission Traffic Study

Kevin Vazquez, a kindergartener at Cooper Dual Language Academy was killed last week when he and his father attempted to cross Ashland Avenue at 18th Place and were hit by an oncoming truck, that did not see the father nor the son.

At this time, his father is still in critical condition. As a result of this sad and unfortunate accident, Alderman Solis has commissioned a traffic study of Ashland Avenue from 14th Place to Cermak Road 17th to 19th Streets. The preliminary study concluded a stop sign or traffic signal is not warranted at 18th Place, though international crosswalks should be installed with a raised, squared-off median to replace the existing median that tapers at the intersection. Creating this new median will provide a pedestrian refuge island for those crossing the wide intersection at a spot at points without a crosswalk. This accident is a sad reminder that we all need to be more aware of our surroundings.

· Look both ways before you cross the street
· Don’t text or use the phone while driving or crossing intersections
· Be especially diligent and aware during busy times
· If at all possible, cross the street at designated crosswalks
