The Basic Facts:
The census is a count of every person residing in the United States. The Constitution requries a census every 10 years, and the next one occurs this year in 2010. April 1, 2010 is the actual Census Day.
* The Bureau has mailed cusus forms in mid-March
* The form takes only about 10 minutes to complete
* The Bureau will send out bilingual forms
* Census takers will follow up with households that do not respond

Whey Does the 2010 Census Matter to You?
Government, businesses, and non-profits all rely on census data. In face, the census is the only source of comparable neighborhood-level data across the country. And its results affect a wide range of key policy decisions:

* Political representation. Cenusus data determine the number of Congressional seats each state has. They are used to draw Congressional and state legislative district lines, and in some communities, they also decide city, county, and school board seats.

* Funding. Census data directly affect how more than $440 billion per year in federal and state funding is allocated to communities for neighbhorhood improvements, public health, education, trsportation and much more.

* Civil rights. Census data are sued to protect our civil rights such as enforcement of the Voting Rights Act.

Responses Are Confidential
By federal law, the inforamtion on your Census form is completely confidential and cannot be disclosed for 72 years. The Census Bureau does not share an individual's information with courts, the police, or any other government agaenc such as the Internal Revenue Service.
