Welcome to Pilsen! The heart of Pilsen is along 18th Street, an active commercial corridor, with Mexican bakeries, restaurants, and groceries. Pilsen has always been a port of entry for successive waves of poor foreign immigrants. The first Bohemian (Czech) families came to Chicago in 1853 and began settling in Pilsen in 1868 in large numbers.

In addition to the information below, the PilsenPortal.org website is a good resource for additional Pilsen neighborhood news, organizations, businesses and resources.

Pilsen Issues

An unfortunate tragedy occurred on October 13th, 2009, when a Pilsen resident, Martha Gonzalez, a 36 year old mother of two, was fatally struck in a hit-and-run on the intersection of 18th and Halsted.

The City of Chicago will be shifting to the Blue Cart Recycling program citywide between June of 2008 through the end of 2011.

Kevin Vazquez, a kindergartener at Cooper Dual Language Academy was killed last week when he and his father attempted to cross Ashland Avenue at 18th Place and were hit by an oncoming truck, that did not see the father nor the son.

Chicago Public Schools are working on a longer school day and we would like any interested parties to be involved. Please contact your school principal to participate in one of the committees. If you would like more information, there is an FAQ that you are able to download to answer any questions you might have.

UPDATED: Please download recaps of the meetings in Spanish and English.
