On Friday, May 7th, the late Alfonso Valtierra will be honored, as a portion of West Arthington Street is being dedicated as “The Honorary Alfonso R. Valtierra Way.”
The Galileo Scholastic Academy of Math and Science opened in 1991, with Valtierra at the helm, as both the founder and first principal of Galileo Scholastic Academy. The school joined the Little Italy and Pilsen youth and made Galileo Scholastic Academy a top school, garnering numerous awards and attention citywide.
The school has succeeded not only academically, but culturally as well, due to the early influence of Valtierra. In his own words, Valtierra left this message: “Students learn to embrace the differences in fellow classmates… our students have built a community by understanding each other’s history and embracing their differences.”
In honor of this respected and dedicated educator, Alderman Solis introduced a resolution to City Council commending Alfonoso Valtierra, along with the staff and students of Galileo Scholastic Academy. The unveiling of “The Honorary Alfonso R. Valtierra Way” street sign will happen on Friday, May 7th at 9 o’clock in the morning at the corner of West Arthington Street and South Aberdeen Street in Chicago.
